While listening to German radio the other day, I noticed that the presenter repeatedly pronounced the German word Passwort incorrectly. The mistake was that he pronounced “Pass-” as in the British pronunciation of the English word password, listen here and here. The correct pronunciation of Passwort can be found here. I find the mistake quite surprising, because most German native speakers know perfectly well how to pronounce the word Reisepass (German for passport). Although the German word Passwort does derive from the English password, I would have thought that it had been part of the German language long enough to not cause such problems for a professional.
