Inspired by a conversation among English language students I overheard on the bus (in which the word idiom was pronounced incorrectly), I looked up the pronunciation words such as idiot, idiom, ideal, etc. Here is what I found:
- The letter i is pronounced as [i] in idiot, idiosyncrasy, and idiom.
- The i in idea is always pronounced as [ai], listen here. The same holds for ideal and idealized.
- In the case of ideology (and related words), the i can be pronounced either as [i] or as [ai], with [ai] being more common.
