check vs. check out

While attending a virtual conference on the topic of machine learning, I witnessed several speakers (non-native with respect to English) use phrases similar to

Our code is available online, please check it!

Asking the audience to check their code is almost certainly not what the authors had in mind, since this would imply that there are doubts regarding the correctness of their work and they want other researchers to help them. Instead, what the speakers most likely wanted to say is

Our code is available online, please check it out!

This could either mean that the audience is encouraged to take a look at the code or to actually download it from a code repository server. Either of these meanings is much more positive than that of the actual quote above.
