The word analysis can be challenging in a number of languages (I remember a few incidents from my first university course on Mathematical analysis). This post is motivated by two occurrences of the same mistake in the last month at work. As with many other English words, the pronunciation of the noun (analysis) differs significantly from that of the associated verb (analyse/analyze). Whereas analyse is pronounced as [‘ænəlaɪz] (listen), with the stress on the first syllable and the letter y pronounced like the letter i, the noun analysis is correctly pronounced as [ə’næləsɪs] (listen). Here, the stress is on the second syllable and the letter y is not at all pronounced like an i. For completeness, let me also include the plural of analysis, namely analyses, which is to be pronounced as [ə’næləsiːz] (listen). Finally, make sure there is no chance of embarrassment that could arise from pronouncing the first letter in analysis like that in anal (phonetic spelling [‘eɪnl/], listen here).
